Whetherinsulated or traditional,a façade remains exposed to the elements even after the finishing render has been applied. A water-based acrylic façade paint provides additional surface protection, offering a uniform finish and good breathability; it is available in 5- or 14-litre buckets, depending on the size of the project.
A façade paint based on acrylic copolymers in an aqueous emulsion forms, once dry, a micro-coating that provides an opaque, uniform and slightly textured finish on the façade render. It can be applied by brush, short-pile wool roller or spray, in two cross-coats with an interval of at least 6 hours between coats to allow each coat to set before the next is applied. Coverage varies depending on the tool used, ranging from approximately 4 to 5 m² per litre when applied by brush and 3 to 4 m² per litre when applied by roller for both coats; this information is useful for estimating the volume to order before starting a façade renovation. The surface must be clean, dry and sound, free from any traces of grease or stubborn dirt, and any existing paint must remain firmly adhered and not flaky in order to accept a new coat. The recommended dilution should be moderate, around 10 per cent when applying with a brush and 5 per cent when using a roller, as excessive dilution weakens the film’s durability once dry.
A facade paint intended for external thermal insulation composite systems (ETICS) must allow the wall to breathe: a high water vapour permeability class prevents moisture from becoming trapped behind the finish coat, whilst maintaining moderate permeability to liquid water to withstand rain. When used on an external thermal insulation system, its application is subject to a prior assessment of the relevant ETICS system, as the maintenance of the insulated façade is governed by specific rules. In terms of application, the ‘climate window’ is just as important as the product itself: avoid application at temperatures below 5°C or above 30°C, in high ambient humidity, in the rain, in freezing conditions, in direct sunlight or in strong winds, as this may result in defects in appearance or long-term durability. The two pack sizes – a 5-litre bucket for touch-ups or small areas, and a 14-litre bucket for a complete refurbishment – allow you to order just the right amount without any wastage. The resulting finish is matt, with a slightly rough texture characteristic of micro-coating, rather than a smooth, glossy appearance.
