Base coat and reinforcing mesh for external thermal insulation (ITE): the role of protection

The invisible layer that holds your façade together

The protection provided by an external thermal insulation system (ETIS) relies on a reinforced base layer: a base coat into which an alkali-resistant fibreglass mesh is embedded. This withstands impacts and temperature fluctuations, and prevents cracks. It is applied to the insulation boards before any finishing render is applied. The undercoat is selected according to the type of insulation:

A 96 adhesive-plaster, for polystyrene and rock wool;
the KB13 417 lime-based undercoat for more mineral-based systems.

As for the reinforcement, the Lifitex 160 CSTB mesh (4 × 4 mm mesh, 160 g/m², ETE-19/0428) is the standard for external thermal insulation (ETI) systems. It is laid into the still-wet render, working from top to bottom, within the outer third of the layer, with at least 10 cm of overlap between the strips. The 140 g façade mesh, with a 10 × 10 mm mesh size, is used for reinforcement and routine façade work. The requirements of the Fassatherm Technical Approval:

the mesh must be fully embedded;
the base coat must be at least 4.5 mm thick once dry;
installation must take place at temperatures above +5 °C, with no risk of frost within 24 hours.

Allow approximately 4 kg/m² of base coat on EPS and 6.3 kg/m² on rock wool.

External thermal insulation (ITE) finish coat: acrylic-siloxane, silicate or paint

A finish that protects as well as it enhances

The finishing render for an external thermal insulation system (ETIS) is chosen based on two criteria: protection against water and the wall’s ability to breathe. Once the base coat is completely dry, an adhesion primer is applied. This is FX 526 (0.12 to 0.16 l/m²), tinted to match the finish, which evens out the surface. Next comes the finishing render. Centrale ITE offers two options, both with a particle size of 1.5 mm:

RX 561 (acrylic-siloxane). This is the most protective finish: low water absorption (class W3), medium vapour permeability (V2), fire reaction class A2-s1,d0. It is protected against algae and mould. It is suitable for exposed façades and EPS insulation. Coverage: 2.4 to 2.7 kg/m².
Fassil R 336 (potassium silicate). This is a mineral finish with very high vapour permeability (V1, Sd < 0.14 m). It is ideal for use on rock wool, wood fibre or old building structures. It is applied over its dedicated silicate primer, or over FX 526 if the substrate is not very absorbent.

For maintenance, MR 287 paint (acrylic with a micro-coating effect) refreshes an existing façade with two cross-coated layers. It should only be applied to external thermal insulation after a preliminary assessment. Colours should be selected from the Fassa ‘365 A Year of Colours’ colour chart. Please also note that a 0.6 mm grain size must never be applied to an external insulation system.

How to finish your façade without making any mistakes
