Alkali-resistant fibreglass mesh forms the reinforcement for any external thermal insulation system. Embedded in the base coat, they absorb stress, withstand impact and prevent cracks in the render. The ITE mesh, with a 4×4 mm mesh size and a weight of 160 g/m², is a CSTB-certified fibreglass reinforcement designed to strengthen the base layer of external thermal insulation systems. Sold in rolls measuring 1,000 mm x 50 m (50 m²), it offers a tighter mesh and a higher weight per square metre than the standard mesh.

Its CSTB certification makes it the preferred solution for external thermal insulation systems requiring reinforced mesh, particularly in areas most exposed to mechanical stress.

Facade mesh, 10×10 mesh, 140 g/m² – 50 m² roll

The 10×10 mm mesh facade reinforcement, 140 g/m², is a fibreglass reinforcement designed to be embedded in the undercoat plaster of external thermal insulation systems. Sold in rolls measuring 1,000 mm x 50 m (50 m²), it provides mechanical reinforcement for the reinforced base layer.

Its 10×10 mm mesh and 140 g/m² weight make it suitable for standard renders used on masonry or concrete façades.

Fibreglass mesh for external thermal insulation (ITE): role and technical characteristics

The reinforcement that prevents your façade from cracking

An external thermal insulation (ETI) mesh is an alkali-resistant fibreglass mesh. Embedded in the undercoat, it forms the reinforced base layer, which distributes expansion stresses and resists impact. Without it, the render would crack at the panel joints and corners. The alkali-resistant treatment is essential: cement- or lime-based mortars attack unprotected glass. The Lifitex 160 CSTB mesh is Centrale ITE’s standard product for external thermal insulation systems:

4 × 4 mm mesh (aperture 4.0 × 3.7 mm);
160 g/m²;
tensile strength ≥ 40 N/mm on delivery, and still ≥ 20 N/mm after ageing in an alkaline environment;
elongation ≤ 5 per cent;
CE marking (ETE-19/0428), QB certificate and ETAG 004 compliance;
rolls of 1 × 50 m.

The 140 g façade mesh, with a 10 × 10 mm mesh size, is used for localised reinforcement and façade work outside certified systems: reinforced skimming of existing render, and crack repair.

Laying the reinforcement mesh: overlap, reinforcement and double reinforcement

When properly mounted, it provides protection for decades

A correctly installed mesh is fully embedded in the render, positioned in the outer third of the layer, with strips overlapping by at least 10 cm. The method described in the Fassatherm Technical Assessment involves three stages:

Apply a first coat of base plaster using a notched trowel.
Unroll the mesh from top to bottom and press it into the fresh render using a stainless steel trowel, ensuring there are no creases or air pockets.
Cover with a second coat to completely encapsulate the reinforcement.

Once dry, the base coat must be at least 4.5 mm thick. At specific points, reinforcement is applied before the general mesh is laid:

diagonal mesh strips at the corners of windows and doors;
fabric-reinforced corner beads on the edges;
an overlap of at least 20 cm on each insulation panel at the junctions between two different types of insulation (EPS and rock wool).

On the ground floor, in areas exposed to impact (walkways, school playgrounds, car park edges), double reinforcement enhances mechanical strength. Consumption: surface area × 1.10, plus approximately 0.3 m² per opening for reinforcements.
